Genesis of SoPlace

The concept of SoPlace was conceived in 2012 a collaborative framework by an informal network of geographers, architects, urbanists, urban planners, ecologists, and sociologists from Southeast Asia, North America, and Western Europe. The World Sense-of-Place Summit (SoPlace1.0) was inaugurated on 30 October 2013 at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre, Malaysia in conjunction with MYPlaceMYBrand – attended by 589 Global Speakers and Delegates from around the world.

WORLD SENSE-OF-PLACE SUMMIT

SoPlace Summit is the world’s first congregation for sense-of-place. We share, learn, network, collaborate, trade and be inspired by great conversations. Working with communities and governments, and across sectors and geo-political borders, the Summit will demonstrate that it is possible to bring about the changes necessary for a positive future of our place – district, village, town, city, state, country, region and our world. The Summit provides opportunities for incubating and networking for new ideas, innovation, and sustainable socio-economic change, as the urban century demands; and expectations placed on sense- of-place are unprecedented. It is a glocal platform for place-based leaders, government leaders, sectoral experts, and key stakeholders to engage meaningful and primacy of the sense-of-place – address the challenges of liveable and sustainable places, share trend-setting ideas, real-time solutions, and forge new collaborative initiatives.

SoPlace Expo

The dominant element in a design is the one with the greatest visual weight (or the one that everything else points to). It’s the element that attracts the eye first, more than anything else on the page.Be careful not to make the element so dominant that it completely obscures everything else, but do make it stand out in the design. Your dominant element is the starting point for the story you’re telling. It’s the entry point into your design. It should attract visitors to the first place you want them to look.

This is how you start a conversation with visitors. The dominant element is noticed first and sets the context for what’s seen next. It’s at the top of the hierarchy. It should emphasize your most important information, because it might be the only thing anyone will see. Whatever message you want people to take away should be clearly communicated in or near your dominant element.Without an entry point, viewers will have to work harder to find their way into your design.
