Alfonso Vegara is an architect-urban planner that holds other degrees in Economics and Sociology and has a doctorate in Architecture and Urban Planning. He has directed his professional life towards improving the urban habitat, defending the importance of research as the base for a sustainable development of cities and regions. Since 1997 he has been the Founding President of the Fundación Metrópoli, a laboratory for studying, developing and sharing urban innovations. It is a global, not-for-profit institution dedicated to building a sustainable future by using the most innovative concepts in the development of cities and regions around the world. Among the initiatives key to the institute’s work is Project Cities, which studied the innovations, competitive advantages and success factors of 20 cities globally. Prior to Fundación Metrópoli, Dr. Vegara was President of Taller de Ideas, which he founded in 1987. In this role, he specialized in regional and city planning and architectural services for clients worldwide. He also served as an advisor to the government of Singapore for the One North Project and to a number of local governments such as Curitiba, Dublin, Casablanca, Madrid and Bilbao. Taller de Ideas has also developed projects such as the Regional Planning Strategies in the Basque Country, awarded the European Urban & Regional Award in 2006.

Also, the design of the Ecocity of Sarriguren (Navarra), acknowledged with the Good Practice and Sustainability award by the Habitat Programme of the UN. In 2007, Dr. Vegara was awarded the Jaime I Prize in the category of Landscape, Urbanism, and Sustainability. The Jaime I awards are given by the foundation of the same name, which is based in Valencia, under the Honorary Presidency of H.M. the King D. Juan Carlos. Dr. Vegara has been Professor of Urban Planning in a number of universities in Spain, and has lectured at European and American universities. He has published several books and written numerous articles in various journals. In 2006 he published Territorios Inteligentes, a compendium of the research on cities and regional planning carried out in the past 10 years. Between 2002 and 2005 Alfonso Vegara was President of International Society of City and Regional Planners. He has also maintained close ties with Eisenhower Fellowships since 1987, when he was selected to be Eisenhower Fellow from Spain. In 2004, he was appointed as Honorary Consul-General of Singapore in Madrid. Dr. Vegara holds a degree in sociology from Universidad Complutense de Madrid, a degree in economics from the Universitat de València, and a doctorate in architecture from the Universidad de Navarra.
